Difficult Things to Learn

Writer's picture: Lyle MeeresLyle Meeres

Where we say, “A stitch in time saves nine,”

Other cultures have collected their wisdom in gems

Such as “You don’t leave the hyena in charge of the meat.”

But sometimes we forget, leave crooks in charge of money,

And call it “Good Business.”

We find it difficult, perhaps, to learn who are the crooks,

And we find it difficult to learn who we are.

I remember the would-be engineer who couldn’t pass physics.

I remember the nice girl who wanted to save every soul she met

And lost her own.

And I remember the young man who couldn’t hang onto a dollar

And wondered why he failed in business.

I remember, too, my dream to be a writer––

Though I never had time to practise my craft.

“You can’t pick up a pebble with one finger.”

Sad, but true!
